In 1934, Douglas built the DC-2 transport aircraft, the predecessor to the famous DC-3 of 1936. Douglas presented the DC-1 prototype, which met TWA’s requirements, and the production version of the DC-2 was developed based on it. TWA initially ordered 20 aircraft. Additional orders were placed by other U.S. and European airlines. In Europe, the DC-2 flew in the colors of KLM, LOT, and Swissair, among others. Aircraft for European customers were assembled at Fokker facilities. There were also military versions used by the U.S. Air Force and Navy. A total of 156 units were built. During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), Republican troops converted a civilian DC-2 into a bomber, but the aircraft was confiscated at the Seville airport by Nationalist forces. Technical specifications: Maximum speed: 338 km/h; rate of climb: 5.17 m/s; maximum service ceiling: 6,930 m; maximum range: 1,750 km.
